The man who I think was the biggest Phillies player in the 60's. Member of the Hall of Fame, he played for the Phils in 1964-1967 and again 1970-1971. Jim pitched a perfect game against the Mets on 06/21/64 retiring all 27 in a row. Oddly enough, he is not the only Phillies pitcher to have retired 27 consecutive batters in a game. It was done by both Curt Simmons and Robin Roberts, yet neither pitched a perfect game let alone a no-hitter. He also has the record for most hit batsmen in a season for the Phillies with 19. Some might say that was on purpose =:)
Had 25 games of ten K's or more and 23 shut outs in 208 career starts for the Phils. Could just dominate a game!
Jim had quite possibly the best pitching year of all time in 1950 for the Whiz Kids. He was named NL Most Valuable Player as a relief pitcher. Of course he pitched 152 innings appearing in 74 games. A record for that year. He pitched for the Phillies from 1948 to 1954 appearing in 314 games with a combined win and save total of 94-top ten in Phillies history.
I guess the bottom line was if he had the ball at the end of a game, more often than not, the Phillies won.
